Drug Facilitated Sexual Assault

Definition –

this type of sexual assault involves the administration of an aesthetic type drug to reader a victim physically incapacitated or helpless and thus incapable of giving or withholding consent. Most common chemicals used are: alcohol, Rohypnol, GHB and GBL.


The Drugs 


Alcohol – 

Most common drug facilitated agent. An offender may take advantage of a woman who has had too much to drink or is too drunk to resist or consent, or after he/she has completely passed out.



Rohypnol – Most common name – ‘Roofies’

Properties: It is a very powerful sedative which will make a victim very drowsy. Dissolved in a drink, Rohypnol is often odourless and tasteless.

Effects: Lasts about 8 hours, Drowsiness, Tiredness, Memory Loss. 

 

GHB - Most common name – ‘G’ or ‘Liquid X’

Properties: It usually consists of an odourless liquid. It looks like water and can easily be poured into drink. It will cause a spiked drink to have a slightly soapy taste and the effects are very similar to alcohol.

Effects: Unconsciousness, Seizures, Death, Severe Memory Loss, Takes effect in 15 minutes and can last between 3-4 hours. 
 

 

GBL

Properties:  It is often sold under the guise of a dietary supplement or an industrial cleaner. It has a bitter taste but can be masked by strong drinks. It comes in various flavours e.g. lime, cherry, cinnamon. It takes approximately 30-45 minutes to take effect.

Effects: Severe memory loss, Lethargy, Loss of bladder control, Coma, Death.

1. Do not leave your drink unattended 

2. If someone offers to buy you a drink – go with them to order it and carry it yourself 

3. Watch out for friends, always leave a bar/club together 

4. If you suspect that friend has been drugged – call 999
