Intersectional Feminist Approach

‘A prism for seeing the way in which various forms of inequality often operate together and exacerbate each other’ Crenshaw (1989).

Rape Crisis Midwest work using an intersectional feminist framework, this begins with an understanding of the unequal power relationships created by the sex/gender system. This core inequality intersects with class, ‘race’, ethnicity, age, legal status and disability.

Advice For Supporters
And Professionals

When someone discloses any form of sexual violence, whether recent or in the past, it is never easy. Whether you are a friend, family member or professional, our advice in these circumstances is to tell them:
  • It took a lot of courage for you to tell me this; I believe you
  • Many survivors blame themselves for that happened, so please reassure them that it was not their fault
  • Let them know that you are there for them and that you can help in any way
  • Let them make their own choice and decision about seeking support or what to do next
